A real world example of a desert, is the Sahara Desert. It is the world's largest hot desert. It covers most of Northern Africa. It is over 9,000,000 square kilometers, it is almost as big as the U.S. and Europe.

A year's completely too long. 9m square kilometers is about 9,000,000,000 meters, each equaling in one step, so I'd say a few weeks (if well prepared) to a few months.
